Waiting for the Light

In the countries up north, as in Sweden where I live, this time of the year artificial light is very important to drive away the darkness. People say our mood up here is as gloomy and dark as this winter season… But on the 4th Sunday before Christmas Eve, we all put up stars and candlesticks in our windows. And they will be up at least until the middle of January. At our tables, one candle each Sunday is lit – in waiting for the birth of Christ.

I would like to share my windows with you – to light up this first Sunday of waiting.

Travel theme: Sky

Ailsa has given us a new brilliant task – to show Sky. The sky is the limit and the inspiration. Constantly changing and enigmatic.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Lights

Light and lights are essential to almost all living beings. And, the play of light is fascinating. It cathes the eye and holds our imagination alive.

My choices for this challenge about Lights are all from Spain. The first one from an early morning outside the great palace, when the sun lets its rays play with the lamp post  making us believe it’s being lit up from inside… The second photo from a gallery, is also lit up naturally by the sun.

The third photo and the fourth are both from Gaudí – The lamp from the ceiling in his house, lit up from inside as well as from the natural light through the side windows and the figure of Christ bathing in light – also from above.

Puerto Mogan

So I returned to this Island In the Sun after 15 years. Once visited when the children were small – now back for almost only one reason – Puerto Mogan. I hope you understand why.

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Numbers or letters

Cee’s task for us this week is all about numbers or letters. Well, the most fun ever I’ve had with numbers and letters was on New Zealand – and surely I made a post of it somewhere…but here are some of them again! Love, love love their humour down under! Letters instead of numbers…and the reverse…

Ladakh – Ride of a lifetime!

Breathtakingly beautiful

The chimes of “Juley!” still ring in my ears and a content smile comes on my face, thinking of those peaceful eyes and warm cheerful smiles. Juley means ‘greetings’ in Ladakhi. Everyone greets each other by saying ‘Ju-leyy’ in a way that almost sounds like a sweet song! 🙂 This simple sweetness of the people, stunning scenery and the adventures on our bike ride through 3600 kms of Himalayas, and I’ve fallen in love all over again with life and travelling!

It’s been a month since I got back from an awesome road trip to Ladakh, and I still haven’t found enough words to describe what I saw or felt just being there! It takes a while to get over the solitude and the overwhelming scale & beauty of these Himalayas! Enchanted by the clear blue skies, unrealistic moon-like landscapes, beautiful ancient monasteries and the jaw dropping night skies…

I first met Ingrid Yañez at Playa San Miguel Costa Rica when she was in charge of the sea turtle project for Pretoma, an organization dedicated to protecting sharks and sea turtles.   After few years later,  work took her elsewhere, but we have stayed in touch.  I sometimes lob updates to her about my sea turtle encounters, and she shares news about her efforts (with her husband Alex Gaos) in saving the rapidly-declining populations of sea turtles.  They are presently working diligently in conservation for the highly-endangered hawksbill turtles. Their enthusiasm is infectious about recent discoveries: ”Prior to 2007 hawksbills were thought to be essentially extinct in the eastern Pacific…they have been documented using cryptic nesting sites, often located inside estuaries, where they come ashore behind stands of mangroves to deposit their eggs.  They also use these in-land mangrove waterways to forage. ”

Eureka! Mangroves?!!! Could that have been…
