This Pyreneean marmot let us walk straight up to her without her whistling or disappearing down her hole. Then we understood her unusual behaviour – her little baby was too far away from her.

Weekly Travel Theme:Transportation and Wild Weekly Photo Challenge – Flying

I would like to participate in Ailsas Weekly Travel Theme: Transportation as well as in the online magazine LetsBeWild’s Weekly Photo Challenge – Flying! I’m short of time before Christmas with all my class tests, and the grades to be handed out, so…here we go!

The first picture shows a lonely balloon in the windless evening sky over Arrowtown, New Zeeland. I have never flown a balloon but would very much like to – especially over a landscape as beautiful as this.

Another way of flying and transporting is of course done by animals, and here it’s represented by a spring bee soon to land in one of my cherry trees. No flowers in the photo, but there were plenty of them on the tree and the little transporter is heavily loaded with pollen already.

The Hobbit

Ikväll ska vi äntligen få se den – Peter Jacksons efterlängtade film om the Hobbit. Då får vi se hur han hanterat J R R Tolkiens lilla bok. Det ska bli härligt att sätta sig i biosalongen och befinna sig på Nya Zeeland igen, i Hobbiton! Jag återkommer med mina intryck i morgon.

Wild Weekly Photo Challenge – Peaceful

I ganska många år brukade vi åka en vecka varje vinter till den lilla fäbodvallen i Fryksås ovanför Orsa. En oas i livet, som drevs av en äldre dam och hennes dotter. Med tiden blev vi lite mer bekanta, men den där dalska kärvheten och strävheten försvann aldrig riktigt i damernas tilltal. Jag vet inte om det hör till när man bor däruppe ganska ensligt, eller om det var en familjehistoria. Men i de gamla fäbodarna trivdes vi. Ingen telefon, ingen radio ingen TV – och ingen dator. Knappast läsvänligt dock, vilket var ett litet aber. Man läste och spelade spel om kvällarna, i stearinljusens sken. Detta gjorde förstås att vi gick till sängs ganska tidigt, trötta efter en hel dags skidor i den fantastiskt vackra naturen där uppe. Alla älskade vi denna fridfulla plats, men 2010 var kanske sista gången vi åkte dit tillsammans alla fyra i familjen.

I’m participating in the online adventure travel magazine LetsBeWild.com’s Wild Weekly Photo Challenge , and the task this week is to find a photo representing Peaceful.

For many years we went one week every winter to Fryksås in Dalarna. This is a mountain pasture with old houses that are kept in the old traditional way with painted furniture and no real contact with the outside world. We used to ski daytime and play games and read in the evenings – by candlelight. We all love this peaceful place, but since 2010 we haven’t been up there. Sadly enough, that might have been the last time we went all four of us together.

The photo was taken an early morning outside our house, overlooking the lake in Orsa.

Weekly Travel theme: Circles

Temat den här veckan handlar om cirklar. Eftersom jag redan använt min favoritbild av en cirkel, som är en koru – vilket innebär nytt liv på maoriernas språk, så fick jag tänka lite extra. Men, jag fann ganska snart en röd tråd i tanken på liv och nytt liv.

Resultatet blev detta: Först en målning av Salvador Dalís hustru Gala, där hennes ansikte ges liv av ett antal cirklar. Sedan det tibetanska Livets hjul, som visar buddhisternas syn på livet, och allra sist ett fält av maskrosbollar i solnedgången. Maskrosbollar vars små frön kommer att dansa iväg i den ljumma sommarvinden under sina runda, skira parasoller och ge upphov till miljontals nya maskrosliv.

I have already posted my favourite circle – the maori koru, so when Ailsas Travel theme for this week was circles, I started thinking about the meaning of koru – new life. It didn’t take long to find three other favourites also meaning new life.

So, here they are: First Gala, the wife of Salvador Dalí, who in this painting is put together and given life by the use of many circles. Then the Tibetan Wheel of Life that symbolizes the Buddhist perspective on life, and the third and last picture that shows a field of dandelions in the sunset. Dandelions that will spread new life with millions of tiny capsules, dancing and swirving under their circular umbrellas in the soft winds of summer.

Wild Weekly Photo Challenge – Texture in Nature

Textur, struktur i naturen – det handlar veckans Wild Weekly utmaning om. Mycket finns att visa när det gäller detta tema, allt mellan himmel och jord.

Det spelar ingen roll hur konstnärligt och sinnrikt du som människa skapar ett mönster eller en struktur i ett verk – naturen kommer ändå att ha skapat något mer komplicerat, något mer fulländat och vackert. Jag väljer och vrakar och hoppas att du ska tycka att mina val är njutbara.

Weekly Travel Theme – Hot

Temat för Ailsa den här veckan är het. Själv hade jag inte haft något emot en het sommardag vid havet just nu…Vi har ett antal minusgrader och sol, dock. Underbart efter allt grått och regn. Mina val för temat handlar inte om behagligheter, utan verklig hetta. Något att se upp för och njuta på behörigt avstånd…

Ailsa’s travel-themed photo challenge this week is Hot. I wouldn’t mind a day on the beach right now, but unfortunately… It’s freezing cold with sunshine though – and I’m thankful for that. We’ve had such grey and rainy weather for several weeks and this reflects my mood too. My work is consuming me at this time of the year and I’m neglecting my family and friends as well as myself. But soon, soon there will be a break around Christmas when the lights will warm me up and the laughter of my children and my friends will give me new life.

”Some like it hot”, and my choices for Hot are just that – HOT.

Island har gett namn åt sprutande hetvattenkällor – Geysir heter sådana över hela världen. Den ursprungliga Geysir har numera inga utbrott längre, men den ligger kvar där på Island, helt stilla. Kanske, kanske en dag att den vaknar igen…

The original Geysir, from which all geysirs have their name, is still there on Iceland, but resting. Maybe one day he will wake up again… Strokkur was the one most active when we were there.

Mudpool, NZ

Lerpölarna är ljuvliga. Jag funderar alltid på om de förekommer i någon Bondfilm…Det vore ett utmärkt sätt att avliva någon skurk på – kokande lera?

Mudpools are great. They are beautiful and fascinating, because they change all the time while you are watching them. I always think of James Bond…hasn’t some bad guy been thrown into a boiling mudpool? Maybe it’s only wishful thinking…

People actually live with this heat in their vicinity. These waters used to be a well visited spot for the children of the village, but now it has turned too hot to bathe in.

Människor bor och lever här, nära hettan. Guiden berättade att barnen i byn brukade bada här varje dag, men att det nu blivit alltför hett och farligt. Den vulkaniska verksamheten förändras hela tiden. Byn lever också i ständig fara att sjunka ner i den heta marken. I ett tidigare inlägg har jag berättat mer om vad man kan använda heta källor till.

In an earlier post I have written about how hot springs are used today. If they are not too hot they are used for various healthy baths, but otherwise, people cook food in the water or use the steem for it.

My fire

Vi blev tyvärr tvungna att kasta ut badkaret, så det här är vad jag kan åstadkomma hemma för att bli riktigt het. Under stormarna nödvändig när elen försvinner.

This is my way of getting hot at home…putting a log in the open fire and snug up close with a glass of hot tea or chocolate. During the storms we have in winter sometimes we have no electricity working for days – then this fire is essential to the house and its inhabitants.

When I think of reflections, I think about some special ones that I am really fond of… so these three pictures represents some of my warm memories on the subject. Hope you will enjoy my feelings for this week’s Photo challenge from WordPress.

I went out this beautiful summer evening to photograph the sunset, and Mille had to stay inside so he wouldn’t swim again before going to bed. But he knew I was out there, and was watching me from the window.

Under those dancing sunrays reflected in the cold icelandic sea, there is a giant whale, a humpback, soon coming up to the surface. That’s why all the birds are gathering – they know there will be a nice meal for them too.

My kitchen was filled with youngsters making saffron buns, and I just had to sneak outdoors and catch them through the window… and this was the result! There were even more of them!

The Sam Wanamaker Theatre

BBC News – Globe’s new Sam Wanamaker indoor theatre to be lit by candles.

Så ska the Globe få en inomhusteaterdel – eller – en teater intill för inomhusföreställningar. Den byggs på gamla originalritningar och ska i stort sett helt och hållet köra sina föreställningar i skenet från stearinljus. Man lyckades en gång med att få lägga halmtak på the Globe, så detta är ytterligare ett undantag i de stränga bestämmelser som råder sedan Den Stora Branden i London.

Teatern kommer att heta the Sam Wanamaker Theatre, efter skaparen av the Globe, och första speldagen kommer inte att bli förrän 2014.

Sam Wanamakers egen historia med Shakespeare’s Globe är intressant. Han var amerikan och inbiten shakespeareälskare, på besök där teatern en gång hade legat. Visst var det en skam att engelsmännen själva aldrig satsade på att bygga upp the Globe… Wanamaker gav sig inte utan genomförde sitt drömbygge sedan 1940-talets besök, men gick bort innan han hann se sitt mästerverk klart. Dottern Zoë Wanamaker invigde 1997. (För oss nordbor kanske hon är mest känd som madame Hooch i Harry Potterfilmerna.)

Och – har du inte varit där än, på the Globe, så kanske du kan gå på båda teatrarna nästa gång du är i London! Det tänker jag göra. Sommartid. Guidningen på the Globe genomförs suveränt hängivet, men den här gången vill jag se en föreställning också.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Thankful

Denna veckas utmaning från WordPress utgår ifrån den stora helgen med Thanksgiving. Något liknande har vi inte i Sverige, men tacksamhet visar vi förhoppningsvis ändå, mot livet och för varandra. Lite oftare borde vi kanske visa det, men det behöver inte vara med stora festligheter. Jag tror att det räcker långt i vardagen – att du verkligen tänker på att visa och tala om att du är tacksam!

Det skulle bli väldigt mycket att skriva och många bilder att visa om jag skulle ta med ens en bråkdel av vad jag är tacksam för. Så, här kommer i all korthet mitt bidrag, som utgår från att jag fått komma hit och att jag har mina fem sinnen: syn, hörsel, smak, lukt och känsel. Ett tillägg gör jag, som för mig är viktigt för att kunna leva ett gott liv – humor!
