The Death of Stalin (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4686844/)
“The distribution certificate for the film The Death of Stalin has been withdrawn,” a culture ministry spokeswoman told Agence France-Presse.
Russia’s Communist party, the second largest party in parliament, has called the film, which revolves around the vicious infighting that followed Stalin’s death in 1953, “a form of psychological pressure against our country”.
Nadezhda Usmanova, head of the Russian Military-Historical Society’s department of information, told Reuters that the film was “despicable”. “It’s a bad film, it’s a boring film, and it’s vile, repugnant and insulting,” Usmanova said.
The Death of Stalin, which picked up four British Independent Film awards last year, stars Steve Buscemi as Nikita Khrushchev, Stalin’s successor, and Michael Palin as Vyacheslav Molotov, the Soviet diplomat. Zhukov is played by Jason Isaacs.
I must say that I was a very good girl and searched out this film immediately upon seeing the title of your post (without reading it first). I’m not a fan of history as such since it’s always written by the winners and it’s always violent. The film was refreshing and illustrative, though. I believe it was if not exactly like this, very similar (but even more terrible). Only Steve Buscemi’s accent was in the way. I love him but he sounds exactly the same in each role. Here he makes a hilarious New Yorker out of the old Nikita. 😀 Anyway, thank you for the recommendation, it was a good watch and my parents will enjoy this one even more.
I am glad you liked it. I have never seen Buscemi before, but think he portrayed Chrustjev convincingly…despite the accent of course…;-D
Oh, he is a great actor and I agree. Here he was a bit unrecognisable. He was in Big Lebowski and Mr. Pink in Reservoir Dogs.
Have not seen any of those…
I do like Michael Palin so just the fact that he is in it makes me want to see it.
Not a big part, though. But still.
I put it in my Netflix cue. Hope it comes to the US soon. Thanks for the tip Lela.
Thank you for the recommendation. I don’t see it in my library yet, but I’ve put in a request 🙂
Then, let us know your thoughts about it!
I will.
