Lens- Artists Challenge #276 – Looking up Looking Down

We welcome our guest host this week, James of JazziBee blog. He wants us to look both up and down to find interesting things…and indeed that is something at least I should do more often! So many times I have rushed ahead missing out on things above or on the ground – and many times behind me.

Walking in forests are rewarding, and even more so if you remember to look both up and down. It is not easy to see anything if you look sideways in a dense forest, but the Amazon canopy and forest floor are amazing. Not many plants grow in the faint light on the forest floor, but there are tiny mushrooms and ants for example. Lizards and frogs can be found on tiny leaves there too.

Swedish autumn usually displays a colourful canopy and looking down the water reflection and the fallen leaves make for a golden treasure.

Happy Danish skies! During a kite festival you have to look up – and I guess you cannot miss out on that!

Then look down when the party is over… inflated kites look quite awesome too. The very size of them is impressive.

Finally some structures and buildings that I found really interesting to look both up and down from, from the inside as well as the outside! A fascinating Kew Gardens installation (do you see the two feet in the first one?)

And Seattle’s Space Needle. Very special both of them, and in the last image, I could look down on the girl who was looking up, and at the same time see all the way to the ground as well.

Many thanks to Anne of Slow Shutter Speed for hosting last week’s challenge ‘Fill the Frame’ – thanks also to all of you who sent in such a marvellous range of frame-filling responses. Next week’s challenge will be set by Patti, so please look in on her Pilotfish blog for inspiration.

  1. Your post was a treat, Ann-Christine. The forest looked so mysterious and grand, the kites were surreal, the installation awe-inspiring and the needle view was breathtaking. Beautifully shot, all of them.

  3. loved your views of the Space Needle. Interesting and clever to see you include the kites up and down to see the size of them and the impact it brings to photos. My favorite this week must be the tiny mushrooms that might be looked over if not looked for.

  4. Wonderful photos, Ann-Christine. The kite festival looked like it was a lot of fun. The architectural images are breathtaking and take the viewer right to the scene. I fell in love with the tree photos, both the one looking up and the reflections. Amazing!

    • Thank you so much! The kites were flying for two days, and there were 5000 people flying them. Great days! I was happy to share the trees, because the colours are now almost gone .

  5. The last three are remarkable and left me dizzy too. I don’t think I could get those photos. My favourites are the Kew Gardens closely followed by the kites. Wonderful post, I love it.

  6. Astonishing, that last sequence, Ann-Christine! I felt quite dizzy too. And I was peering at the first of the Kew installations, looking for the feet. I’m going back to the calm and beauty of the canopy, above and below.

  7. I don’t even know where to start, A-C. The header photo drew me in immediately and nothing after let me down. The kites are stunning and that last set of photos is so well-chosen and executed, but I wouldn’t be on the glass floor!! I also appreciated your comments about looking up and down rather than just outward. That makes all the difference.

  8. Once I saw the kites I had eyes for nought else! . . . That said there is a price to pay for looking up the way I always do . . . you stumble, of course you do . . . and then you don’t look but fall down 🙂 !!!

  9. A beautiful response as always Ann-Christine (although I must admit it made me dizzy to look at your final image – Yikes! Your golden leaves and their reflection are glorious and only you would see those tiny mushrooms. But my favorite of the post has to be the kite festival. I just loved that! I’m going to recommend we do something like that on our beach here at Kiawah. The summer visitors would love it!

    • Thank you, Tina. And how great it would be on your beach too! This Danish beach is enormous in size – in every respect. But, I think it would be grand over at Kiawah. Not to disturb all the birds though…

  10. I love all your images here, Ann-Christine! There’s a lot that is surreal here. Your water reflection is surreal and then so are the kites. But you’ve just continued with striking images. Not sure that I could pick out one favourite from this wonderful presentation. Thanks for joining in the challenge.

  11. Lovely time of the year to look up Ann-Christine. Loved your Autumn leaves. I’ve never seen inflated kites fly before, but I’m not sure they are quite as beautiful when they are deflating on the ground. Great images of the Space Needle looking up and down. Awesome photography no matter which way you were looking!
