Clouds hanging low – but Blue Skies!

Many happy memories from the Light Move Festival in October –

– and walking down the Piotrkowska street in Lódź, the clouds soared right above me…just as close as they feel now in Skane, Sweden. But in Lódź they were brighter, whiter and let no rain fall on me…

Thursday’s Special: Pick a Word in January – y3

Go to Paula, Lost in Translation, and pick a word or two from her five suggestions! I picked festive (midsummer dance many years ago), angular (a famous monastery, Varnhem) and  auricomous (monkeys at Auckland Zoo).

The words are candescent, algid, angular, auricomous and festive

Varnhem

Auricomous – blonde

Vega de San Mateo – A Colourful Market

Fond memories from Gran Canaria include the colourful farmers’ market in the village Vega de San Mateo. Every Sunday the farmers come in to sell their crops, art and craft.

I still enjoy looking at the many colourful people, spices, fruits and vegetables, sitting here this grey winter in Skåne.

And the Band! They played gorgeous classical music, jazz and popular music – and they were many and Very Good. I wish we could have stayed longer.

Thursday Thoughts – Winter Solstice – Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Today we will meet our daughter at the airport (bringing light to this day of darkness!) and this Sunday our son will come home. Days of joy and happiness.

An astrologer revealed that this year’s Solstice is different from others in the past, because for the first time since 1664, the Sun will move into Capricorn, some hours after Saturn makes the same exact shift; this will cause the Sun and Saturn to actually line up, a phenomenon which could have very uncomfortable consequences.

Personally, I do not believe in these consequences, but I do know this is the darkest day in the northern hemisphere – and then the light will return! So, my deepest gratitude to all of you out there who read, comment, or even follow me – you always brighten my day!

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

More Christmas!

More, more…of coziness – this time at Harastorp! Still rain, but at least warm by the fire…

This little friend I was terribly tempted to take with me home…

Isn’t he just adorable?

Christmas Market – Already?

Today a short visit to the nearest town and the first market this Christmas.

Raining…when there should be white everywhere…but we had fun anyway!

Many surprises awaited the children of course…and the sweets and almonds got bought  – and eaten – by grow-ups as well.

Indoors, first the main building and then the wings. A beautiful old mansion, once belonging to my husband’s uncle. Now, since many years belonging to the city.

Some hundred exhibitions with everything home made – from sausages and marmalade to clothes and candles. I always say I will not buy anything…but…

Plovdiv – New Town – A Perfect Combo

The history of Plovdiv spans more than eight millennia. The numerous nations that lived here have left their traces on the twelve-metre-thick (39 feet) cultural layers of the city. The earliest signs of habitation on the territory of Plovdiv date as far back as the 6th millennium BC…

As we left the Old Town and entered the New…we realized that the whole city is a gem. Walking down the main street, a warm and sunny afternoon, the surprises unfolded – one after the other.

The Ancient Roman Stadium of Plovdiv was built in the 2nd century, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, and lies beneath the main street from Dzhumaya Square to Kamenitsa Square. It was modeled after the stadium in Delphi. The Plovdiv stadium was approximately 240 metres (790 feet) long and 50 metres (160 feet) wide, and could seat up to 30 000 spectators. Below is the entrance to the stadium.

The athletic games at the stadium were organised by the General Assembly of the province of Thrace. In their honour the royal mint of Philippopolis coined money featuring the face of the ruling emperor as well as the types of athletic events held in the stadium.

Only a small part of the northern section with 14 seat rows can be seen today; the larger part lies under the main street and a number of buildings.

But, you can step down through the layers and meet the combination old/new in a very fascinating setting, with café’s, shops and …steps and stairs from different times.

I do not think I have ever visited a city that manages to combine the Old with the New as gracefully and innovatively as Plovdiv. I more than understand the choice of this city for European Capital of Culture in 2019. I might return then… there is much more to discover here! Maybe I will see you there – 2019?

Thursday Thoughts – Marvellous Murals

Several street art festivals are hosted by Łódź, and luckily, many of the murals are permanent. Some of them has got the artist’s name on, some not. Anyway – I hope you will ENJOY just as much as I and Viveka did! In her blog, Myguiltypleasures, you will get more interesting facts!

In the header is my favourite piece, and in case you should want more of this from Łódź – just click the links here, here or here.

Parks and Alleys – Light is Everywhere

For five years Łódź has been hosting the Light Move Festival, and last year there were 50 000 visitors. I can understand why. Let us count down…and walk with the crowd!

Many planets and clouds moving –

And, let us count down again…and have a spooky walk in the park…with wild animals, hanging tree witches and other creatures!

What about giant shining flowers made of plastic bottles? Or the traditional balloons!

In the big square we enjoyed the Grand Finale – The Rossman Building and the cathedral, dancing and moving in spectacular light shows …The short movies are on my Facebook and on Instagram – it is not possible to transmit the feeling with only photos…

My favourite birds though…over there to the right. Then we finished off with our own ”Rosegarden”, sparkling in the darkness. It has got a special and very touching story – go to Viveka at Myguiltypleasures to read it! Good night to you all!
