To play with fire – Walpurgis night, the eve of May Day

The celebration of this evening is very different if you are 5 years old, 15, 35 or 50. Fire, fireworks and hot dogs for the youngest and their parents, the teenager might, sadly enough, even drink a bit too much and the grown-ups of my own age and older prefer some nice lamb sausages or lambchops, hamburgers and some cider. I do think that all categories of people love to poke around with the fire.

For my own category it’s essential to be with very good friends, laugh and sing, and to move closer to the fire when the evening gets late and the chill of the night threatens to wrap you up. This year the evening and early night was brilliantly bright and crispy.

  2. I AM that very person who likes to poke around the fire AnnChristine I love love open fires bonfires anything with real flames Lol
Glad you had such nice celebrations !

    • There always are, yes. And people in the countryside almost always have a fire of their own. The big bonfires are often in parks in the towns and cities, and there they have fireworks too.

      • Interesting. Here the celebration of Spring has survived since ancient times. It’s also an international workers’ day. People used to bring red flags and walk the streets in procession together. They don’t do that much nowadays, but the event still exists in the big cities.

    • Oh dear, my dictionary (which I had to consult for the name) said eve of May Day, but also another name, which I didn’t recognize at all. Thank you for telling me – I have put the other name on too – hope it is correct!

      • I’m very impressed that you’re able to write your posts in two languages. I’ve never heard of Eve of May Day celebrations, but I don’t know much about your Scandinavian traditions.
As I understand it, May Day celebrations occur on May 1 and are an ancient Northern Hemisphere spring festival.
