In my garden the House Sparrows are more or less gone – instead the Eurasian Tree Sparrow is increasing in numbers. These are both common birds in Europe, but I would like to see some research on why the House Sparrow is disappearing more and more up here in the Northern countries. If you travel south in Europe, they are still numerous. Strangely enough it is the House Sparrow that wants to live close to humans, so they are the ones who (with simple logic) should have been the winners.
This is such a wonderful photo! Birds are so hard to catch for me.
For me too. But htese are eating just outside my window.
Amazingly close!
I need to get a bird feeder. The squirrels destroyed my old one!
They are clever little animals, aren’t they? I don’t have any squirrels here in my garden, but my mother has. And she usually enjoys watching them as they eat upside down.
Yes they do but they are very destructive around here!
I can see they could be…
Yes they make huge plastic protectors but the squirrels drop inside from the trees …it inventive but they eat all the seeds then AND scare the birds away!
I love these beautiful and precious birds, but they are loud… 😀
So they are – when they come together! Watching their behaviour is interesting though. And the thought of about 3-4 grams of feather ball being so alive and alert!
Do you have an annual national garden bird survey like we do in NZ? http://www.landcareresearch.co.nz/science/plants-animals-fungi/animals/birds/garden-bird-surveys This tracks garden bird numbers each year. One year, sometime ago, house sparrow numbers were affected by salmonella amongst the birds.
Interesting! I didn’t know about the salmonella outbreak. We do count garden birds here too, but that’s done during winter. Birds fed in our gardens during wintertime are counted, and then there are not many of these sparrows anyway. Counting sparrows, I imagine, would be more adequate summertime.Thank you for the link too.
None here either Ann-Christine 😦 Two fat pigeons if we are lucky …
I bet there was a lot of ‘chattering’ going on with this collection of sparrows !
Super photos .
They are loud, the little ones. They seem to fight and argue all the time when they are many.
Fönsterputsen i fredags gjorde susen…
Haha. My my.
Beautiful bird gallery Ann Christine. We used to have loads of house sparrows until a few years ago. Now we don’t see any, at least not in the urban areas that I visit and live in! Here the pigeons seem to have taken over.
We have got some pigeons, but they stay mainly in town. Then you too have lost the house sparrows.
Like you, I wonder why?
Yes, as I wrote I would like to know if there’s been any research on this.
Love your little birds 🙂
I love them too – but wonder why the other birds are not here anymore.
such joyful pictures
Thank you! They were fighting some, but finally shared…
