  1. Ehhh, var du också i Umeå senaste helg eller fattade jag fel? Själva var jag där på lördag och såg invigningen. Tog en hel del bilder men tyvärr så blev de enbart RAW-format så jag får en och en konvertera dem till jpg. Tar lite tid.

  2. Umeå. go for it … love your pick of photos – I have never been, but I heard so much posetive about Umeå – so I should really go … but has to be in the summer. This was news to me.

    • They are a smiling city! Thank you! In Sweden they are called ”the city of birches”, so a visit in spring is overwhelmingly wonderful. They are hosting together with Riga.

      • Our city has a problem with birch trees. They are a pest and cause terrible allergies and hayfever. But I recently discovered that the variety of birch tree we have here is slightly different from the one that is most common in Europe. Your variety is easier to live with 🙂

      • Interesting – I had no idea there were differencies. It’s in spring they are dangerous, or? We have some of it here too, but here hay fever is also caused much by grasses and other plants too. Luckily no one in our family has got those problems. No allergies at all. Do you know many people having these problems? In my school many children have different allergies, and some of the teachers too. Last year we got a student who can not stand even a paper from a bar of chocolate containing peanuts. The whole school had to ban every use of peanuts. Dreadful problems for the poor people having these allegies, and they are increasing.

On the radio I heard that scientists now had managed to get some people less allegic to peanuts by feeding them small amounts of extracts and gradually increasing it.

      • The worst time is between now and May. The pollen and little seeds fly everywhere. They come inside the house, fall in our food, get in all the washing on the line, block our gutters. http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/opinion/editorials/9610450/Get-rid-of-these-noxious-trees And make us cough and sneeze.
It’s wonderful that your family is free of allergies. Perhaps we need to study your diet and your environment to know how you have avoided them. Allergies are, as you say, becoming so common.

      • Interesting article. In Sweden we mostly have three species: Betula pendula (same as in NZ), B. tortuosa (in the mountains) and B. nana (a dwarf). It seems to be the national tree of Finland as well! Wiki also says that they should grow in the northern hemisphere or very high up in the mountains. Maybe that could be a reason to why they are so dangerous to people when grown in the ”wrong” areas?

Thank you for making me learn new things again!

      • Yes, I do agree that they are growing in the wrong area/zone. Usually the problem is not the natural tree, or plant, but where we humans have chosen to put it! Their pollen season also coincides with the time of our strong summer winds. When the hot, dry Nor’West blows, I have to go inside and shut all the windows to keep out the silver birch. Thank goodness for air conditioning!

Halva verket är läsarens - så, vad säger Du? As the second half is the reader's - I'd love to have Your line!
