The beech forest is at its loveliest this time of the year – and this year there is an abundance of flowering trees. Pollen is everywhere. Walking in the forest covers you in this fine ”dust” and the lakes and brooks all have a thin yellow layer on their surface.
We guess this is all due to last years’ dry conditions.

I was too late for the flowers! But lovely wine coloured seed capsules are just forming. I’ve never seen them at this stage. Fascinating, Ann-Christine. So thank you for inspiring me to go and look. So much we don’t actually notice.

Am amazed how soft and rather woolly they look at this early stage. I truly had no idea about the development of the beech nut, though as a child I always liked to collect the outer shells once the nuts had been expelled.
I did the same – they are soft inside and nice to feel.
