Today, 04.27 – The Winter Solstice

The Winter Solstice is here. Today, December 22, the sun is at its lowest elevation and stands in a position that does not vary for several days. That’s the reason for the term solstice, which combines the Latin words sol, for sun, with stit, from the word sistere—which means to stand still. And then, the life giving Light returns.

  1. Am happy for you tho’ our beautiful long evenings will soon begin their disappearance act . . . as even in the depths of our winter here the sun is up by 7am and does not leave us until 5pm . . . well, I guess one should not complain . . . enjoy . . .

  2. No sun visible here to mark the solstice – it’s grey, mild and windy. But it’s nevertheless a welcome turning point and I’m looking forward to gradually noticing the days lengthening in due course 🙂 Beautiful snowy image ❄❄

  3. Yep, 3.27 GMT. Not that I was awake to mark the event. I am told the angle of the earth does mean that the mornings remain darker for longer for a few weeks. That always seem to make the winter darker for longer than it really is. But without wishing time away, roll on Spring 🙂
