SL-Week 49: Vintage

For Sylvain Landry: Vintage from New Zealand and the old train ”Kingston Flyer”.

WPC: Earth

The challenge this week from WordPress is to “…share your vision of our glorious Mother Earth”.

I feel…we are a tiny, gloriously beautiful, island out in the great blue – surrounded by stars and the heavens. Who is at the wheel? I wish we had better control …I fear we have lost the sextant and with it, our ability of navigation.

SL-WEEK 42: Car

Cars can be fun, but also beautifully decorated. In New Zealand I just loved all the cars wearing innovative signs or being richly decorated. As I am a fern lover – the header car with silver fern caught my eye.

Sylvain Landry loves the colour red – so here is a red Lion as well…

CFFC: Things that are Hot

As I have just been soaked in the hot pools in Iceland, I quote: ”Some Like it Hot”…

Hot pools in New Zealand and in Iceland. The difference is that you should not put your foot in the NZ pool…you might lose it.

SL-WEEK 27: Pride

I am immensely proud of my daughter, who after high school went to New Zealand as a volunteer worker – natural science. NZ is far away from home – in fact they are our antipodes – and she did not know anybody there. I never got the opportunity to go when I was young, so a bit envious I was…

She handled it perfectly well and worked with everything from clearing the djungle to setting up traps for rodents and vermin.

This photo reached me after some weeks – and the pride I felt was overwhelming. A working girl, with knife , machete and saw – doing good things for Mother Nature. My Daughter.

Now she is studying to become a dentist, and when finished, she is determined to go back to NZ to live and work there.

For Sylvain Landry – Pride

SL WEEK 8: On the Road

Art On the Road. Being a language teacher, I am a great Lover of Words. Making art with words demands certain skills as well as practicing, practicing and again – practicing.

In New Zealand they love making life on the road more fun. And they are very skilled…

Hopefully you will enjoy these as much as I did during my stay there in 2011!

Cee’s Black and White Photo Challenge: Trees

Irresistable – a challenge involving Trees. Join in!

Click here for more about how.

What trees and what forest could be more suitable for a dreamy memory than the one where Frodo and his faithful companions could be found? New Zealand, Wellington.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Scale

New Zealand’s great glaciers, Franz Josef and Fox make their visitors feel exceptionally small. The Franz Josef (Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere in Māori) is a 12 km (7.5 mi) long  glacier located  on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Together with the Fox Glacier 20 km (12 mi) to the south, it is unique in descending from the Southern Alps to less than 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level, amidst the greenery and lushness of a temperate rainforest.

Walking up to the glaciers was very easily done, and we were greatly rewarded. I have walked glaciers in several countries in Europe – but these two are the most remarkable ones of all. Imagine the rainforest coming down almost to the floor of the glacier, and you could touch them both from the path!

The photos show the scale very clearly, but the feeling of walking there is impossible to convey…you have to be there yourself.

Weekly Travel theme: Metal

Ailsa’s theme this week is about metal. New Zealand again – Metal things found in the sea, metal for a playground in Auckland, for the Zoo, and works of art for the harbour in Auckland. Mostly impressed I was by the most beautiful dustbins I have ever seen – and for the water in the street …have you ever seen such a marvellous detail?
