Lens-Artists Challenge #297 – Music to My Eyes

Egidio is leading a challenge made for real music lovers this week – and I have chosen two of the most loved songs in my book, Morning Has Broken and What a Wonderful World. Be sure to visit his beautiful site for more inspiration. And, if you are participating, please link to the original post and add the Lens-Artist tag.

Morning Has Broken – is a Christian hymn first published in 1931. It has words by English author Eleanor Farjeon and was inspired by the village of Alfriston in East Sussex, then set to a traditional Scottish Gaelic tune, ”Bunessan”. Cat Stevens made it popular all over the world. This song I consider to be one of the most beautiful ones ever written. My children know I want it for my funeral. In Cat Steven’s interpretation.

What a Wonderful World – was written by Bob Thiele and George David Weiss. It was first recorded by Louis Armstrong and released in 1967 as a single. In April 1968, it topped the pop chart in the United Kingdom, but in the United States the president of ABC Records disliked the song and refused to promote it.

After it was heard in the film Good Morning, Vietnam, it rose to number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100. Armstrong’s recording was inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.

Louis Armstrong – I always hear his grainy, harsh voice whenever I feel overwhelmed by nature, grand landscapes and its beauty, silence and serenity. His voice is the perfect choice for every moment…

It is a wonderful world in every detail…

big or small…

from the tiniest dew drop …

to the abundance in flowers…

colours…

and animals. And everything and everyone new to the world is soft…

fragrant…

and wonderfully fresh.

My Swedish favourites I had to leave out…but I have some there too of course. Songs from our own language are special, and like all other lyrical texts, cannot be translated properly with their original feeling. In the Scandinavian countries you often find a melancholical touch with music written in a minor key. Music for magical summer nights and autumn colours.

Last week we had Ritva making us post abstract photos – and it was really an eye-opener on how many abstracts we really make! Thank you for a great challenge!

Next week it is Tina’s turn to host, be sure to visit her magical site for more inspiration. Until then – stay calm and be kind.

  2. What a Wonderful World was a choral arrangement that my daughter sang while she was on tour in Europe with a children’s choir…and I was a chaperone. That became our Mother/Daughter dance tune at her wedding, after her father had died. It will always hold a very special place in my heart. ❤

  3. Lovely images, Ann-Christine! I also used Morning Has Broken for this challenge. I liked your misty landscape photos and the blooming purple pasque flower. Beautiful.

  4. Beautiful from start to finish, Ann-Christine! Morning has broken is one I often find myself singing and your images are lovely. I listen to a lot of Portuguese music these days, and often don’t understand the lyrics, but I can still enjoy the mood. Happy travels, darlin! Envious again.

  5. I fell in love with your first three images. ”What a Wonderful World” is an amazing way to begin the new day as the sun begins to rise above the horizon.

  6. Fully agree with „what a wonderful world“. I‘ve chosen the similar one by Sam Cook as a bonus song.
And I have to admit, I forgot „Morning has broken“. Well done, Ann-Christine 👍👍👍👍👍

  7. Beautiful images Ann-Christine and the Cat Stevens version of Morning Has Broken is one of my favourite songs too 💚🎶

  8. Your chosen songs fit your photographic style so well! That last tulip image is a stunner, but my favourites apart from that are all in your morning gallery – they all have that special light that comes with the early part of the day 🙂 And I learned something new – I never knew that Eleanor Farjeon was inspired by Alfriston when she wrote that poem!

  9. Your entire post reads and feels like a song, AC. I, too am easily stopped by both songs. The images are contemplative as I imagine you might have felt when taking them. Morning has Broken immediately made me think of my dad. I can remember him singing it, even though he wasn’t one to sing. I think he loved its message as you do. Thank you for that. I loved all this! SO much.

  10. Great choices Ann-Christine! Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World has been playing on the radio station I listen to. How’s that for serendipity. And I love your images for Morning Has Broken. You have me thinking of how to create my response.

  11. Ann-Christine, you really tugged the string of my heart. I absolutely love your two songs. The photos you shared are magnificent. The photos so vividly echoed the songs. I’m touched by the beautiful images you shared. Thank you!

  12. Ann-Christine, I did not know the history of Morning Has Broken, only that it was one of my favorite Cat Stevens songs. Also, you taught me much I didn’t know about What a Wonderful World. Perfect choices for your post, and your photos are breathtakingly beautiful.

  13. Beautiful Ann-Christine – no surprise there. I adore both of the songs you chose although I didn’t think of them for the challenge. I’m so glad you did! Your morning images are especially glorious.
