Lens-Artists Challenge # 420 – Looking Back to You Pick It #125 – Wabi Sabi

Sofia leads us this week – towards Wabi-sabi, a famous conception explained like this:

Wabi-sabi is a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. It is a beauty of things modest and humble. It is a beauty of things unconventional. – Leonard Koren

I have a special love for these imperfect, impermanent and incomplete things in life. Nature is maybe the best example, but also fragments of art like these horses from Olympia. Dramatic still – all made with different expressions.

Many buildings fit the bill in Greenland. Worn and asymmetric, but still beautiful.

At the Blue Planet in Copenhagen, I tried my best to photograph these big fishes – I forget their name – but they were between 1 and 2 meters long. They were fast too, and the windows above their water tank made the photo totally different from what I was after – but in fact, I love it.

In Budapest, many years ago, I wanted a night photo of that iconic green bridge. This was the result…but, I loved it. I find it almost as beautiful as the bridge itself.

The last pictures have to be from nature – Nature is the master of Wabi Sabi.

I believe a major reason to why we love these things, is the fact that we shall all decay and return to Mother Nature.

Imperfection is a snapshot of our journeys of growth and living at a particular moment in time.
― Beth Kempton,

And, I don’t know about you, but for the last few years, I have found myself appreciating this concept even more. Yes, I am ageing…but also, too much perfection makes me suspect AI. And that, does not belong to the natural world.

Thank you to Sofia for this wonderful challenge, and thank you John for last week’s challenge that showed so many significant places new to me! Next week it is Patti’s turn to lead us, Saturday 7th November. Until then, take care and be kind.

  1. Very much so Ann-Christine, I hope the decline of our environments around the world will shake up those who are blasé.

The buildings of Greenland sure do have that wabi-sabi look.
