Tuesday Photo Challenge – Memories
After a wonderful, one month long, trip to New Zealand 2011, suddenly our tour guide from The Lord of the Rings tour in Wellington turned up for our Midsummer celebrations in 2012. And he brought a girlfriend as well. One of the best Midsummer events ever!
Just for fun – is Patti’s challenge for this week. Well, I cannot promise any fantastic shots from me …but I promise I had fun taking these photos!

For many years the whole family traveled through Europe by car every summer. Sometimes we had to wait for hours in long queues, especially on Autobahn in Germany – so, here’s my daughter trying to cheer things up…

A photo I had to take, since we all are great Lotr fans, and my daughter found a Uruk Hai warrior (he really was one of the actors in the movies!) at Matamata, NZ…
I guess his son was a bit surprised…This young dad in Rome jumped up on a fountain lion himself…
And finally, I caught the biggest fish in Gore, NZ…
A strong willed little one!
A short trip this summer to Dunkers in Helsingborg – for Shaun Tan, our beloved, Australian illustrator of children’s books. On arrival, we found that the Museum of Failures also had an exhibition there.
My (and my children’s) greatest admiration is his book and movie on ”The Lost Thing”.
The exhibition of drawings and paintings from his books, also featured a reading room – all Shaun Tan – style.

The whole movie was shown at the exhibition – had to see it again!
Corporate flops – as shown on the Museum of Failure was quite interesting, but I only photographed two things. This museum is a celebration of history’s failed products & services and the lessons learned from them.
I didn’t know Trump had launched a board game!
Wikipedia: Trump: The Game was launched in May 1989, with the tagline, ”It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s whether you win!” Trump appeared in a television commercial for the game. Trump and Milton Bradley hoped the game would sell two million copies, although the game ultimately sold poorly. By August 1990, Trump acknowledged that the game may have been too complicated. The rulebook was more than 12 pages long. Trump said the game had sold 800,000 units.
As of 19 September 2018, the game is considered a collector’s item.

…that we brought home the coolness from Lofoten…and…
– now we rejoice in the fresh air after this summer’s sauna heat!

We had one single rainy day in Norway, and decided to spend it in the Blue City – Sortland. The artist Bjørn Elvenes started a millenium project to paint the city blue…
Famous blue cities are Chefchauen in Morocco and Jodhpur in India.
…but how the story ended is still not clear. However, the overall impression is –
that he at least succeeded in large parts of Sortland. Many shades of blue greeted us now that the skies did not show any signs of this colour…
The city is small, but has today got about 10 400 inhabitants.
We enjoyed the one hour walk, even if we had to pop into some shops and the library to avoid the heaviest showers…
A rainy day well spent!
Road nr.10 ends in Å on the southernmost part of Lofoten. An old fishing village with rorbuer and – fish.
And charm…
Many galleries, and flowers in the small gardens.
We had a great view from our hostel Salteriet.
Down the road we felt almost Chinese… I half expected an artist standing there, painting.
When we left in the early morning, the whole landscape felt dreamy and unreal.
Almost supernatural.
But that is what Lofoten does to people…
A wonder – everything in creation is. And, in December 2016, I was fortunate enough to enjoy this tiny Wonder (it is the smallest seabird in the world) with my own eyes, swirling around our sailing ship in the Galápagos’ waters. It is an Elliot’s Storm-Petrel. I took hundreds of pictures of these birds…but only a few show clearly enough the bird’s amazing abilities – it walks, runs and stands on water while feeding. I could watch them for hours –
There are two subspecies, and this one is an endemic galapagoensis; ”Elliot” after the man who discovered the bird and “Petrel” refers to Saint Peter walking on water. ”Storm” was the part given to it by the sailors, who believed the birds were warning them about a storm coming their way.
The whole story of this Storm-Petrel is enigmatic…not only is it pelagic (lives at sea only), but despite a population estimated at many thousands – a nest has yet to be found.

From all over the world they gathered here on Fanö for a fortnight – just to enjoy…
Relaxing over a beer and a barbecue, and
…releasing their new kites for others to marvel at
Or, gliding down the beach in good winds –
In the afternoon, the sky seemed totally filled up – no more room for new kites…
But in this glorious weather, we kept strolling along, getting even more favorites!
But in the end – believe it or not – our own shining sails were filled as well –
and…
We flew up, up and away…
Leaving solid ground, rolling with the colourful wheels…
Realizing that we just could not take any more kites – at least for the rest of the… week…?
Even the dogs wanted to go home for a good night’s sleep…
and the small children got tired of playing along…
So…some people took their bikes and rode to town, while others walked the lonely beach ahead, contemplating –
It had been a marvelous day – Good Night for now, and thank you for tagging along!
