There are over 250 known species of bumblebees, existing primarily in the Northern hemisphere, but they can also be found in South America. Bumblebees have been introduced to New Zealand and the Australian state of Tasmania.
According to 20th century folklore, the laws of aerodynamics prove that the bumblebee should be incapable of flight, as it does not have the capacity (in terms of wing size or beats per second) to achieve flight with the degree of wing loading necessary. It seems their wings work more like a helicopter. They also start a swirl in the air above the bee which makes it easier for the animal to take off.
So, they do fly…and they are fast! I spent maybe half an hour today at a friend’s house, trying to catch more than his beautiful azaleas …but, mostly I got just the flower and som bumblebee legs lifting when my camera had finished clicking…
These are incredibly beautiful! Love the pale pink and clarity of the last one, but they are all great. Thanks Ann Christine 🙂
I’m glad you liked them. Pink is not really ”my” colour, but in spring I love it!
Beautiful!! I really enjoy trying to capture the bumblebees when they are flower hopping, only once was I successful!! You captured so many perfectly composed shots…I really love them all!!
The lovely fuzzy bumble bee, I love them so much. The way they bump enthusiastically around the inside of big flowers, and emerge pollen dusted, and flying a bit drunk on nectar…..they stagger on to the next flower 🙂
They do…but they stagger very fast! I love them too…
Gorgeous photos. You did well to capture them. 🙂
And I had great fun trying!
Lovely photos. Bumblebees, as they bumble about, always look as though they will be easy to photograph but it is really hard to catch them at exactly the right moment.
I think no one is faster of the related species.
True bumble bees never really sit still! The first bee stung Trompie got was one from a bumble bee. He still nears them with respect.
Yes, my dogs too are careful when they hear or notice these flying creatures. When Mille was a puppy he tried to eat one of those…but never again.
🙂
I love bees and humblebees … and I can stand and watch them for 30 min without problems. I didn’t know that there was some many species of humblebees. You have been watching them too … I can see from your lovely gallery. I very seldom manage to get them in shot, they are too quick for me.
They really are for me too…big difference with the real bee or with wasps – those are not half as fast as the bumblebees.
Great work! You should be so proud of such a Gallery. The pinks are so appealing as are the Bees which you captured perfectly!
Thank you for a lovely compliment! Now I can sleep tight with a smile on my face!
You knew it already! I could tell 🙂
😉 You are sweet!
