Stilbrott – Breach of style

Breach of style can be effective and smart, but it can also be offensive to our senses – at least to the eye. In my opinion, when it comes to houses, you ought to do your utmost to make your own house fit into the style in that area.  Especially if the area is one with very old houses. It may be difficult, but, for doing right with your neighbours and for the beauty of it! What do you think? Is this important or should you not care about it at all?

Our new summer neighbours in the area had to take down their old house and chose to build a very modern one right in between the very old fisherman’s cottages. They kindly asked us how to do with their outbuilding to keep it in the old style.  We found that very considerate, and it now fits in very well with our old cottage lying close by.

So, what do you make of these thoughts? Here are some examples to show what I mean:

If the area is filled with these kind of gorgeous old houses or cottages, you should, in my opinion, try to avoid building houses like this:

Is it only me thinking unnecessary thoughts or…?

  1. I don’t know …. I quite like both styles .. and I like when it’s mix .. and not everything is in the same style … there is a place for us all *smile – but I understand were you’re coming from .. too. You truly live in a fantastic neighborhood. I would live in any of those houses. *smile

  2. I couldn’t agree more. I find it very frustrating here in the UK, where modern housing developments reflect nothing of the traditional local building style, or materials. As you travel across Britain, and I’m sure other countries, one of the delights is the way buildings reflect their environment. Modern houses all look the same regardless of whether they are in Aberdeen or Bristol.
Local stone or brick, wood and slate add such delightful character.

  3. I am not against modern things either but, if an area has a certain character which is beautiful and historic, then every effort should be made to maintain that character. One of the most delightful parts of the city, which had many small, old cottages, was severely damaged (land wise) in the earthquakes. Nothing will be rebuilt on that area, but it is so sad that all the little houses, presently there, will eventually go. I hope some of them can be saved and transported to safer land.

    • I hope so too. It’s so sad when historic and very special places are gone in disasters. Earthquakes are terrible for everybody living in that place of course. In Sweden we try to save old historic houses by moving them to another area, but sometimes stupid people go burning them down. We have had several old cottages moved to a popular parc in the nearest town, and some of them have been put to fire more than once. One of them is now lost.

      • Yes, arson is causing a lot of trouble here in places where the houses can no longer be lived in. They are not necessarily historic homes but that doesn’t make the crime any less horrible.

  4. in contrast you your unique and highly-interesting architecture, we have very basic unpainted wooden homes in this area. most of them are two story and have unique ‘old west’ cowboy character, as if they’re on the set of a western movie. sprinkled here and there are flat-roofed concrete ‘boxes’ of new homes, usually two-story, and they look so out of place and taint the total effect of the town. it saddens me to see those very-expensive concrete fortresses that are void of character

    • I feel saddened too when these things occur. Out of place things that destroy the general atmosphere. As you say these expensive things/houses or whatever they are, are totally void of charachter.

When in London now some days ago, many new glass and concrete buildings of great new arcitecture popped up everywhere, destroying the old Victorian atmosphere…It’s not that I dislike modern things – but they should stick to their area!

      • sensitivity to the past is always important. some people are so focused on how they appear to others that they forget what came before.. they have fine homes, but there’s no soul there.

i loved the images that you shared! such great houses with so much character!
