We finally decided to get a DigitDia to be able to see our many travels from the 1980’s and onward on the computer. We started yesterday with Greenland, of 1982. Here are some of the first photos from that trip, taken with a Konica and Kodachrome 64. And yes, it is a young Ann-Christine sitting there, 42 years ago.
We went to Narsarsuaq and expected a beautiful country with untouched nature. The viking, Erik Röde, arrived here in the year 982, so 1982 was the year of celebrating 1000 years of ”discovery”. The Inuits had been here for long, but as usual – the white man ”discovers”… Erik called it ”Greenland” to get followers to settle here. And yes – it was more green than I had thought.
I know I have written these words before – but I never wanted to leave and go back home. The air was extremely clear and fresh to breathe, the nature was amazingly beautiful and the water – was the most fantastic of all. I brought back two big bottles from the glacier streams. I drank one of them, the other one was saved for a long time… It felt like the water of Life.
I am happy. I will be able to easily relive our old travels. Egypt, Nepal, Peru…I hope to post some of them this year.

Wow, the quality in these old slides is excellent! I’m curious how you’re getting on using the DigitDia? Is it quick to scan? And have you had to do much work afterwards to touch up the slides? We have so many and our current scanner is both slow and low quality 😦
This one we bought a week ago, and it was recommended by a very good bird photographer. We are not disappointed – positively surprised! It is fast, less than 5 seconds/slide, and after some software work they look OK. So far, so good. I cannot but recommend it! You can scan single slides or a whole batch. It is easily managed and works alone – no connection to the computer. Name: Reflecta, DigitDia evolution.

we travelled the coast of Greenland and especially NE Greenland several times and we didn’t want to go back home neither. On most on our travels we liked to go home at their ends but not in Greenland. The longest time we stayed in the area of the Scoresby Sound was for ten weeks, much too short. Except Australia we traveled everywhere but Greenland and Ladakh was by far our most marvellous journeys.

I understand you stayed a long time – which we would not have been able to do. We were grateful for two weeks. And Ladakh! That has been a dream of mine, but I don’t think we will ever get there now. Lucky you to have been there.

the last time we have been to Greenland we took part in an expedition of the AWI (Alfred Wegener Institut). The idea was that layman and highly specialised researchers work together. The laypeople should ask the specialist questions they never thought about.
After one of my university degrees I went with a friend first to Katmandu, which was then not touristy at all, and then to Ladakh. We hitchhiked a military convoy to Ladakh. In those times this was the only way getting to Ladakh.

Thank you, Jude – I was surprised at the quality, but had to do some tricks like lightening up and saturating. I did know that kodachrome was among the best in those days – but still, keeping it up for more than 40 years is amazing. That is for sure more than I have done, looking at myself in younger days…
